World Meteorological Day 2007

The Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology celebrated WMO World Meteorological Day 2007 with 2 major events: an open day and a lunch-time seminar session.

The open day consisted of:

·         a poster session; where members of staff illustrated their various research projects

·         a Meteorological office simulation; where patrons were able to view real-time satellite and radar data, observe numerical prediction model outputs and generally have a better understanding of the forecasting process

·         a video session; where patrons were able to view movies concerning hurricanes and tornadoes

·         a reading table; where patrons were invited to read about local, region and global weather and climate events

The lunch-time seminar session consisted of 4 half-hour talks given by CIMH staff members. These talks were targeted at the general public. The talks were:

·         Polar meteorology: understanding the impacts in the Tropics

·         Late season rainfall over Barbados and the southeast Caribbean: November 2004

Presenter: Kathy-Ann Caesar, Meteorologist     

·         The use of the Fifth-Generation NCAR/Penn State Mesoscale Model (MM5) for predicting severe weather

Presenter: Lawrence Pologne, Meteorologist    

·         Radar rainfall in hydrologic modeling

Presenter: Shawn Boyce, Hydrologist                

The events were covered by the local press and were attended by the general public and professionals in the field alike.
