World Meteorological Day 2007
The Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology celebrated WMO World Meteorological Day 2007 with 2 major events: an open day and a lunch-time seminar session.
The open day consisted of:
· a poster session; where members of staff illustrated their various research projects
· a Meteorological office simulation; where patrons were able to view real-time satellite and radar data, observe numerical prediction model outputs and generally have a better understanding of the forecasting process
· a video session; where patrons were able to view movies concerning hurricanes and tornadoes
· a reading table; where patrons were invited to read about local, region and global weather and climate events
The lunch-time seminar session consisted of 4 half-hour talks given by CIMH staff members. These talks were targeted at the general public. The talks were:
· Polar meteorology: understanding the impacts in the Tropics
Presenter: Kim Whitehall, Climatologist
· Late season rainfall over Barbados and the southeast Caribbean: November 2004
Presenter: Kathy-Ann Caesar, Meteorologist
· The use of the Fifth-Generation NCAR/Penn State Mesoscale Model (MM5) for predicting severe weather
Presenter:
· Radar rainfall in hydrologic modeling
Presenter: Shawn Boyce, Hydrologist
The events were covered by the local press and were attended by the general public and professionals in the field alike.
