Course Outlines - Hydrology
Hydrological Observers
This course is designed to train hydrological observers. Technicians completing the observer level course successfully would be able to do the following:

  • Enter data in the database and retrieve data
  • Plot and edit data
  • Carry out hydrometeorological observations and measurements
  • Assist in the compiling and dissemination of hydrological data and information
  • Take part in field work
  • General Technicians
This course is designed for hydrological technicians in areas of ground and surface water, acquisition and analysis of data. Field work is normally conducted outside of Barbados. Technicians completing the General Technicians' Course (GTC) course successfully are expected to:

  • Work with and assist observer level technicians in the field of work but under guidance of Higher Technicians
  • Undertake primary screening of hydrological data; carry out simple analyses and be able to store and retrieve data.
  • Assist HTC technicians and hydrologists in research
  • Topics covered in this course are:

  • Elementary mathematics and Physics
  • General hydrology
  • Water quality
  • Groundwater techniques
  • Data collection and processing
  • Hydrometry
  • Technical drawing
  • Computer literacy
  • Surveying
  • Instrument maintenance
  • Higher Technicians
This course is designed to train personnel for the hydrological services in ground water and surface water techniques. Technicians completing the HTC course successfully are expected to:

  • Supervise GTC level and Observer level technicians
  • Carry out complete screening, analysis and dissemination of hydrological data for both surface and subsurface waters
  • With guidance from the hydrologist, conduct field work in hydrometry, geophysics, ground water extraction, well development and maintenance
  • Assist hydrologists in operations and research
  • Collaborate with agencies in practical aspects of surface and ground water utilization
  • Topics covered in this course are:
